Global Warming Information

Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. why? Well, Al Gore answers in a very intelligent way in his movie called 'An Inconvenient Truth.' To start with, if the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.

Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas, and oil, and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere and temperatures are rising. The vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is real, it's already happening, and that it is the result of our activities and not a natural occurrence.

President Bush has rejected Kyoto, the United States Senate rejected Kyoto 95 to 0, the United States Senate rejected the McCain-Lieberman bill 55 to 43, and there is little hope that Congress will pass mandatory greenhouse gas reductions, at least not in the near future. Paula Dobriansky, under secretary of state for global affairs, and the leader of the U.S. delegation, made the following statement during the 10th round of international climate change negotiations held in Buenos Aires:

"Science tells us that we cannot say with any certainty what constitutes a dangerous level of warming, and therefore what level must be avoided." Those are very shocking statements, especially considering who made them. But as Upton Sinclair, author of "The Jungle", puts it- "You can't make somebody understand something if their salary depends upon them not understanding it."

That's why petrol companies will spend millions of dollars to keep the masses in the dark about global warming. At the same time, the evidence is overwhelming and undeniable. We're already seeing changes. Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitats, and the number of severe storms and droughts is increasing. The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years.

The most effective way to prevent global warming is to use alternative, clean sources of energy, more efficient use of the existing resources and by regulating the population growth.

Too Late for Global Warming

Too Late for Global Warming - 450 Parts Per Million is History - Now What?

hurricane-2.jpgI don't usually like to sulk in the doom and gloom of impending or imagined global catastrophe, but this landmark Christian Science Monitor article deserves a lot more attention that it's getting.

In brief - a UN report is soon due out that shows greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere is now in excess of 450ppm - the threshold which may provoke an irreversible warming trend. The worst thing about it is we reached that number faster than we thought was possible and are not even close to turning it around. As recently as last month, publications were still reporting the 450ppm number as a relatively distant fate we had a chance to avoid.

So now what?

Do we come up with a new goal? Abandon all hope? Get realistic about what we can and can't avoid? Start investing in sea-wall construction companies? Move all operations inland?

Although many people and businesses will do nothing unless faced with the raging fires of calamity, the business case for taking a proactive stance on climate change couldn't be clearer. Businesses that start tackling issues of pollution and inefficiency will do well regardless of whether or not climactic catastrophe is at our doorstep. With the evidence mounting that action may be more urgent than ever before, it's really a no-brainer in my book.

Cars and Global Warming

When I first read this list I was in shock...Then I planned a course of action to be Proactive! The numbers are staggering! Just look at the amount of carbon dioxide emitted...We all need to help fight global warming. Please don't just play the regret it and forget it with the information- Take Action, Create awareness, and be part of the solution called Global Cooling!

First The Numbers:

Automobile emissions account for more than 20 percent of U.S. global warming emissions each year. Car companies could do more and it's time that they do. Check out our facts about cars and global warming and then take action.

232 million Number of registered vehicles in the U.S. That's almost one per person!

600 gallons Average amount of gasoline consumed by one U.S. car each year.

12000 pounds Amount of carbon dioxide emitted from one U.S. car each year.

240 Number of trees needed to absorb the 12,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emitted from one U.S. car each year.

2.7 trillion Number of miles U.S. cars and light trucks traveled in 2004. That's the equivalent of taking 10 million trips to the moon.

5% Percent U.S. population is of the world population.

30% Percent of world's automobiles in the United States.

45% Percent that the United States contributes to the world's automotive carbon dioxide emissions.

4 Number of car companies that support a national cap on global warming pollution. They are Ford, General Motors, DaimlerChrysler and Toyota.

0 Number of bills passed by Congress to cut global warming pollution.

Facts About Everyday Stuff!-Paper

Paper!

Every Sunday, 500,000 trees are used to produce the 88% of newspapers that are never recycled.

Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees.

Americans use 85,000,000 tons of paper each year. About 680 pounds per person.

Offices discard over 4 million tons of office paper every year. That is enough to build a 12 foot high wall of paper from New York to California.

Americans use 15 billion paper cups per year.

Starbucks uses 1.5 billion paper cups per year.

For each 500 phone books recycled, we save 7,000 gallons of water; 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space; 17 to 31 trees; and 4,100 kilowatts of electricity, enough power to serve an average home for 6 months.
